Minimally Invasive Surgery
Riverside Animal Care Center is one of the leading providers of minimally invasive surgery for cats and dogs. The advantage of minimally invasive surgery is decreased healing time post operatively, as well as less pain and discomfort when compared to conventional surgery. Other advantages include magnification of internal organs and lesions allowing better visualization than a tradition open surgical procedure.
One of our leading minimally invasive surgical techniques is laparoscopic surgery. Laparoscopy consists of a five-millimeter telescope (camera) that is attached to a video processor and LCD screen. This allows a clear and magnified image of internal organs while only using a very small incision, approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Laparoscopy allows visualization of internal organs for diagnostic purposes. We are also able to perform ovariectomies and ovariohysterectomies (spay) with the laparoscope, as well as liver and kidney biopsies and cryptorchid neuter surgeries. Using the laparoscope is our standard of care for cystotomies ( bladder surgeries) as well as gastropexies to prevent gastric torsions in our large breed patients.
We have been performing laparoscopic surgical procedures since 2008 and currently 70% of our “routine“ spays are being performed laparoscopically. We are the only veterinary hospital in central Ohio that can claim that a majority of our patients undergoing routine procedures are experiencing this state of the art technology and less pain.
